Jewelry is one of our most personal and cherished possessions. These beautiful accessories are intimately etched in our hearts because of the person who gave them to us, the work we did to earn them by ourselves, or for the memories we made while wearing them. A quality, hand-crafted accessory can last for generations as long as it’s cared for properly. Here’s how to do that:
Keep It Away From Heat
It’s fine to wear your jewelry on hot days of course, but do not store your jewelry in places with excessive heat or in direct sunlight. This can cause fading or damage of gemstones or bleaching of pearls.
Keep It Away From Chemicals
Storing jewelry in the bathroom or near grooming areas is never a good idea. Lotions and sprays can damage both the gemstone and metals. It’s also recommended that you do not wear your jewelry in chlorinated pools, as chlorine is harmful to most metals and gemstones.
Wipe It Down
Gently wipe your jewelry with a microfiber cloth once a week. This will remove surface oils and debris, and help your jewelry shine.
Use A Mild Cleanser
Most colored gems can be cleaned with warm water, mild dish soap (no detergents) and a soft brush or microfiber cloth. Rinse your jewelry in a glass of warm water to remove cleaning solutions since you risk losing loose stones – or even an entire piece of jewelry - if you rinse directly in the sink.
Store It Properly
Most jewelry items come in a box or pouch, which is a perfect place to keep them. Jewelry boxes that feature individually padded slots for rings and posts for bracelets are also great to use.
